About the Department

Since its inception in the year 1970, the PG & Research Department of Englishtakesutmost efforts to make the students competent in the linguistic performance by focusing on skill acquisition through peer teaching-learning, practical sessions and soft skills in the regular curriculum. It aspires to offer holistic education by teaching and training the students in using English effectively, making them employable, and leading them to the total formation of themselves within the human community in accordance with the vision of higher education.The Department of English enjoys the status of being the Research center by the inception of the M.Phil., English Degree Course in the year 2006. This status has been conferred by Mother Teresa Women’s University, Kodaikanal. The Department of English enjoys the special status of being the only department that has contact with every student at the undergraduate level. The starting of Part – II (English) in 1970, B.A., (English) in 1980, M.A., (English) in 2006 and M.Phil.,in 2007 considerably enhanced the prestige and the importance of the Department. Under the autonomous set up, with its own Board of Studies, the Department has been periodically revising and updating the syllabi for the courses including socially relevant and job-oriented subjects and papers which have gained importance in academic circles.

The Department of English strives to impart comprehensive knowledge of the various aspects of English Literature through a competent and cutting-edge curriculum and prepare the students for various professions.

Department Mission :

To empower the students with language skills and soft skills.
To organize intellectually stimulating programmes, workshops and seminars every year on varioustopicsinEnglish Literature.
To get them acquainted with the recent trends and theories of English Language and Literature.
To introduce them to the philosophy and mechanics of research.
To familiarize them with the theories of literature, and help them acquire both theoretical thrust and hands-on experience in writing research papers and theses.
To train them in the methods and skills of independent academic and research work through projects, assignments, seminars, research papers and projects.
To expose the students to the imperatives of careers by training them in various fields including preparing them for the NET/SET examinations.

Seminars and workshops

  • On 23.09.2011 and 24.09.2011, a Two-day Workshop on “Soft Skills” was organized. Prof. R. GangadharaMoorthi, Institute of Language Management, Bangalore gave training to the students on Communicative skills and Occupational skills.
  • On 12.03.2012, a One-day Workshop on “Comparative Literature” was organized. Prof. K. Chinthamani, Head, Department of English, Vidhyasagar College of Arts and Science, Udumalpet and Dr. W.S. Kotteeswari, Associate Professor, Mercy College, Palakkad, Kerala were the Resource persons.
  • On 15.03.2012, a One-day Workshop on “Personality Development” was organized to by APT INDYA, Madurai and the studets of the under-graduate courses were the beneficiaries.
  • On 17.08.15, a One-Day Workshop on “Conducting Scientific Research in Humanities”was organized by the institution in collaboration with Mother Teresa Women’s University, Kodaikanal. Dr. Solomon Arulraj David, Faculty of Education, The British University, Dubai, UAE gave lecture on ‘Techniques and Types of Research’ to the students of M.A., &M.Phil., Degree Courses.
  • On 14.10.15, a One-Day Workshop on ‘Journalism and Mass Communication’ was conducted and the beneficiaries were the students of B.A., degree course. Mr. G. Sathish Kumar, Assistant Regional Manager, Circulation, The Hindu Groups, Madurai made the session more interesting by giving a microscopic view of the newspapers both in Tamil and English.
  • On 08.01.16, a One-Day workshop on “Soft Skills” was organized and Prof. R. Nedumaran, Vice Principal, Kodaikanal Christian College, Kodaikanaldelivered his Special Lecture on the theme of the workshop in the morning session. Dr. V. N. Manjula, Assistant Professor, Government Arts College, Udumalpet delivered her lecture on “Communications Skills – Need of the Hour” in the afternoon session.
  • On 30.1.2017, a One-day workshop on “Making a Short Movie” was organized to fulfill the needs of the technical paper ‘Jounalism and Mass Communication’. Mr. S. Naga Saravanan, Chief Editor of the short movies ‘Iyalamai’ and ‘Dhaanam’ and Mr. R.K. Prabaker, Cinematographer and Editor of the short movie ‘Oviyan’ spoke on the topics “Introduction to Short Movies” and “The Technicalities of Making a Short Movie”. As the peak of the programme, they demonstrated the making of the movie, having the students as the actors.
  • On 18.09.2017, a One-day workshop on ‘Personality Development and Career Advancement’ was organized to ignite the minds of students. Dr. Paul Wilson, Associate Professor & Head, PG Department of Chemistry, Madras Christian College, Chennai, did ‘Career Driver Survey’ as well as ‘Self Analysis’ of students. The students responded well.

Seminars:

The foremost mission of the Department is to train the students to prepare and present seminar papers in seminars and conferences. In addition, the students of English exhibit their leadership qualities by organizing seminars, meant especially for the students of other institutions.

  • On 30.09.2011, a one-day State-Level Students’ Seminar was organized on the topic “Australian Literature” by our students for the students from various colleges and universities. Dr. Anbarasi, Head, Department of English, Government Arts College, Salem, delivered the Key-note Address on the topic og the seminar. 21 colleges participated and 135 research papers were presented.
  • On 07.02.2014, a one-day State-level seminar was organized on the topic “Eco-feministic Trends in Literature”Dr.N.Geetha, Professor and Head, Department of English, Mother Teresa Women’s University, Kodaikanal, Dr.V.Christoper Ramesh, Assistant Professor of English, Govt. Arts College, Melur and Dr.D.Anusuya, Associate Professor of English, Shri GVG Visalakshi College for Women, Udumalpet were the resource persons. Faculty and research scholars from 12 colleges participated and presented their papers.
  • On 27.09.2014, a one-day State Level students’ Seminar was organized on the topic Diasporic Literature. Dr.S.Lavanya, Assistant Professor, Govt. Arts College, Coimbatore gave the special lecture. 100 students from 16 colleges participated and presented their papers.
  • On 21. 02.2015, a One-day National Level Seminar was conducted on “Application of Literary Theories to Literature”. Dr. Bennet, Professor, National College, Trichyspoke on the topic “Literary Criticism Today” and Dr. Venkateswaran, Professor, Bangalore University, Bangalore delivered the Keynote Address. Dr.N.Geetha, Professor & Head, Department of English and Foreign Languages, Mother Teresa Women’s University, Kodaikanal delivered her lecture on “Emerging Trends in Literary Theories”.
  • On 15.09.15, a one-day State -Level Students’ Seminar on South Asian Literature was organized. Prof.K. Chinthamani, formerly Principal in-charge, Government Arts College, Udumalpet spoke elaborately and interestingly on the Literatures of South Asia. Students from N.G.M. College, Pollachi, Sri G.V.G. Visalakshi College for Women, Udumalpet, V.H.N.S.N. College, Virudhunagar, Thiagarajar College, Madurai, Bishop Thorp College, Dharapuram, A.P.A College of Arts & Culture, Palani and J.K.K.N. Arts College, Kumarapalayam presented their papers.
  • On 17.08.2016, a one day State -Level Students’ Seminar on “Canadian Literature” was organized. Dr. C. MuralidharaKannan, Assistant Professor, Govt. Arts College, Coimbatore spoke elaborately and interestingly on the theme. Students from Kongu Arts College, Erode, Thiyagarajar College, Madurai, Sakthi College of Arts and Science, Oddanchatram, A.P.A College of Arts and Culture, Palani, Sri G.V.G Vishalakshi College for Women, Udumalpet, VidhyasagarCollege of Arts and Science, Udumalpet, N.G.M college of Arts and Science, Pollachi, Bishop Thorp College, Dharapuram and St. Antony’s College for Women, Dindigul presented their papers.

Guest Lectures:

The Department holds the pride of being visited by the eminent and resourceful personalities of various colleges and universities.The students get enlightened by their valuable lectures on the emerging trends and forms in literature.

  • On 01.01.2012, Popular Lecture Series was conducted on “Health and Hygiene” by the institution in collaboration with Gandhigram Rural Institute, Dindigul and the benefiaciaries were the students of English. Dr. Rajeswari, Department of Home Science, Gandhigram Rural Institute delivered a Special Lecture.
  • On 12.02.2012, a Special Lecture on “Communication Skills” was delivered by Dr. Mrs. Renuga, Associate Professor of English, Sri GVG Visalakshi College of Arts and Science for Women, Udumalpet to all the M.Phil., scholars of the institution.
  • On 12.10.2015, Dr. G. Dominic Savio, Visiting Professor, Department of English, The American College, Madurai delivered his Special Lecture on “Conducting Research and the Mechanics of Writing”. The students found it easy to get into the topic by the interaction session that followed.
  • On 19.02.2016, Dr. G. Banumathi, Assistant Professor, Department of English, Thiagarajar College, Madurai delivered a Special Lecture on “Women Writers and Theorists in English”. The scholars of M.Phil., Degree course made the session interesting by involving in academic deliberations.
  • On 05.08.2016, Dr. R. Chakkaravarthi, Associate Professor & Head, Department of English, G.T.N. College, Dindigul delivered a special lecture on “Life and Literature”.The students of English found it interesting by the kaleidoscopic view, he gave to the topic.
  • On 13.03.2017, Prof. D. Manoharan, Associate Professor & Head, PG Department of English, AulmiguPalaniandavar College of Arts and Culture, Palani, delivered a Special Lecture on “Images of Women in Indian Literatures – Past and Present”.
  • On 31.08.2017, Dr.N. Vijayadurai, Associate Professor & Head, PG Department of English, Chikkaya Naicker College, Erode delivered a Special Lecture on “English to Scale Higher”.
